The Kansas Arts Commission, The Lied Center of Kansas and the Audio-Reader Network have teamed up to provide AUDIO DESCRIPTION at many of the Lied Center performances, as well as other theater productions in Lawrence, Topeka and Kansas City. Several performances will be described at UMKC's Missouri Rep theater and the Lawrence Community Theater, as will most performances at Johnson County Community College's Yardley Hall.

Describers broadcast from a booth into tiny wireless headphones, and will describe the theater layout, stage, costumes, etc. before the show. During the performance, important and relevant visual information will be discreetly described.

At the Lied Center and Yardley hall, the description system is part of the hearing reinforcement system, built in when the theater was constructed. The headphones also provide a channel with the theater sound, to make it easier for anyone with hearing problems to follow the dialog and music. They can be switched from Audio Description to Sound System Amplification, or can even be set in a position which allows the wearer to hear both channels.

At performances where the describers provide a portable listening system, like Lawrence's Community Theatre, Missouri Rep, the Cotillion, or any others without a built-in system, patrons pick up a small receiver with headphones, like a Walkman. The describers transmit an FM signal to the headphone receivers.

Here's a schedule of upcoming events which will feature Audio Description. No reservation or advance scheduling is required to hear the description. Just come to the performance and find the table in the lobby with the headphones, and pick up a set.

Remember, though, that for most shows only one performance will be audio described, usually the last night of that particular show. (This allows the describers to attend an earlier performance to prepare for the described show.)
