Audio-Reader Program Manager Nick Carswell spoke with the host about what inspired him to become a radio broadcaster, where his musical interest comes from, and what is special about being a radio host with a visual impairment.

Audio-Reader: What made you want to be a radio DJ?

Maurice Martin: I grew up with music in my life. I moved all around different parts of the country and one particular DJ that I loved I had heard on AM station 1250 K-Fox. He was Nasty Ness. His real name was Ness Rodriguez, but he went by Nasty Ness, so from then on at the age of 10 the radio bug bit me, so here we are.

A-R: Where did your love of music come from?

MM: I guess you could say growing up I had been exposed to a lot of R&B, funk, and soul. My grandfather was into jazz. I heard a little bit of jazz, but not so much. I’d also heard a lot of pop music, electronic music. One particular group I can think of is from Germany: Kraftwerk. I love them. Any type of synthesizer songs or sounds, I’m just like “what is that, that’s really cool”. Of course I’m a big Michael Jackson fan, he’s the king of pop. Then there are those obscure artists that I also love that I don’t think get enough love, that radio pass up, in my opinion. Besides acting, David Hasselhoff, I was actually surprised he could sing. In my opinion he’s not bad, now I know a lot of people might not like him, but, you know I’ve grown to love the different genres of music that are out there.

A-R: Your show goes out on a Friday night. What would you like people to get from listening on a Friday night?

MM: If they’ve had a rough week and tune in to Musical Meyhem, I want them to just come in and sit back and know that they don’t have to worry about any profanity, all ages can listen. They can dance. I will throw in some stuff from 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s 2000s. If I’ve got it, I’ll play some jazz from those decades and enjoy a Friday night of great music.

A-R: Is there anything special about being blind as it relates to being a radio DJ?

MM: I would say anybody can do this. You don’t have to be visually impaired to do a radio show. If you have the energy and the spark to do broadcasting, if you just love doing broadcasting, I say go for it! My thing is, if you if you have a dream when it comes to radio, definitely go for it!
